Municipality
The development of an agglomeration is largely conditioned by the site where it is registered. Other factors may also explain it. Overlooking Lake Geneva and close to Vevey, the Jongny site now offers many qualities. In its extreme eastern part, the Lake Geneva basin presents certain particular physical features, meeting point of Lake Geneva and the Pre-Alps, juxtaposition of lake shores and a mountain descending towards them, the region offers a very steep landscape.
On the outskirts of the Veveyse, however, the Lake Geneva region widens somewhat, losing its inclination, a more pleasant countryside appears. It is made of gentle slopes which, covered with vines, orchards or meadows, descend to the lake from the wooded peaks of Pléiades, Mont-Vuarat or Mont-Pèlerin. The village of Jongny is built on the southern slope of Mont-Pèlerin, some 600 meters above sea level. Located near Vevey, it overlooks a vineyard linked to Lavaux, while the upper part of the municipal territory, covered with fields and forests, rises up to 750 meters above sea level. It then extends, declining, in a northern direction, between Mont-Vuarat and Mont-Pèlerin. There begins a natural circulation corridor, known as the "Attalens gap".
Attracted by the site, many residents nowadays settle in the village or in its immediate surroundings. Roads, residences, various infrastructures were carried out; these constructions today give the region a new face. For a long time, Jongny remained a small village, living folded in on itself. Its story, told in the following pages, is however two thousand years old.
